r e g i o n (e s) is an art series taking over spaces in Bushwick throughout the summer to explore issues of community and Latinx identity.
The Lit Exhibit: Summer Sessions
Saturday, June 15 & Sunday, June 16, 2019, 12-10 pm
Friday, June 21, 2019, 12-10 pm
As part of its mission to bridge community with new means of storytelling, the Lit Exhibit presents a series of workshops centered around zines, writing, rituals, and fostering connections. On June 15, discuss magical ritual and writing, make surrealist digital collages, and join in a community game night. On June 16, workshops will focus on writing with “Staying Fresh Isn’t Just for your Groceries, it’s your Writing Too” and “Power Art Creative Writing.” On the 21st, learn about the history of written language and spiritual magic systems as you craft your own sacred texts, enjoy a group meditation session, and examine the idea of love through storytelling, ritual, and inclusive prayer. Danielle Wu: Ghost in the Ghost

Ghost in the Ghost is a group exhibition curated by Danielle Wu that brings together artists who confront the fraught history of how Asiatic femininity in the Western imagination has been repeatedly evoked through the perfected, manufactured, and assembled material, from anime (Charlotte Greene, Tenaya Izu) and porcelain (Candice Lin, Tiffany Jaeyeon Shin, Juana Valdes) to K-beauty products (Elliott Jun Wright). Anne Anlin Cheng describes this violent and deeply psychological process as “Ornamentalism,” or “the forging of the sense of personness through artificial and prosthetic extensions.” Opening reception Friday, June 21. Mariangela Lopez collaborates with luciana achugar on a new movement piece that invites the Latinx community of New York to be part of the creative process. Through workshops and dialogue, participants will jointly develop a unique dance vocabulary inspired by memory and identity. r e g i o n (e s) is an art series that uses performance to explore complicated topics like community and Latin American identity. This summer, they’re hosting events in public spaces across Bushwick. Free

Bed Stuy Social Photo Club

Hidemi Takagi’s Photo Club is a pop-up portrait studio for Bed Stuy residents. Participants can pose with props against colorful backdrops at Hidemi’s stoop-side studio and receive a digital copy of their portrait for free. Keep an eye out for a final exhibition of portraits in September. Free

DanceAction is a contemporary dance company led by Argentinian choreographer Carmen Caceres.
DanceAction Summer Workshop and Performance

Carmen Caceres, DanceAction company dancers, and guest artists Mary Madsen and Sarah Chien will lead an intensive workshop for dancers, musicians, actors, performance artists, or movers of any kind, exploring training, improvisation, and dance-making. The workshop will culminate in a performance at Mark Morris Dance Center’s Cole Studio on June 28 at 5:30 pm featuring dance works developed by the participants. Tuition: $200
Music of Curiosities Coney Island
Thursday, June 27, 2019, 9:00 pm
Kick off Pride weekend with an evening celebrating queer music and performance art at Coney Island. Live performances by rapper Uncle Meg, vegan punk experimental performer KikiRiki Live Poultry, metal-rap duo Ratchet by Nature, artist Crackhead Barney, Dominican hip hop artists Soup, and musician Un Hombre Solo. Tickets: $20
BAC’s Community Arts Grants support Brooklyn-based cultural projects by individual artists, collectives, artist-nonprofit partnerships, and small nonprofits that enrich the cultural life of the borough. BAC’s funding programs provide meaningful technical assistance and professional development from application inquiry to final report in the form of info sessions, application draft reviews, and more.
